The Hunter Region School of Photography has been helping people into successful careers in the photographic profession for over 20 years. Students from the school can now be found all over Australia, working in many exciting areas of photography. Some have set up their own studios; others have found employment with newspapers, magazines, the film industry, and travel and general freelance photography.

Gordon Finn, a RAAF photographer, founded the school in 1987. After several years in Newcastle whilst based at RAAF Base Williamtown, he passed up the opportunity to teach at the Air Force's school of photography in Victoria, to remain in the area.

The school offers a wide range of courses and workshops, covering most aspects of photography. For people just wishing to improve their photography, Photographic Techniques #1, the foundation module for all the school's courses, teaches the basics of photography through to the creative use of the camera. Students who have completed this short introductory course to photography are able to use their camera confidently and creatively.
