Tyalla Public School has a student population of just over 400 students. Whilst the school receives funding under the Priority School Program, students enrolled in the school come from a wide range of family and life circumstances. The school population includes approximately 22% of Aboriginal students and 10% students who have language backgrounds other than English. Each year there is a student mobility rate of approximately 20%.
According to 2006 ABS Census data, the cost of rental accommodation is above the Australian average, while the median income level is slightly above half of the Australian median level, suggesting a relatively low level of disposable income in the community.
Our school was identified for support via the National Partnership on Low SES School Communities program for 2012- 2015. Federal funding will allow for higher levels of support for the school to improve levels of student performance.
The school structure consists of K-6 classes aligned into the three stages of primary education. Classroom programs are enhanced by the purposeful organisation of support staff in the areas of literacy and numeracy.
Staff at Tyalla recognises that it is the nature and quality of teaching and learning which has the greatest impact upon the learning outcomes of students. Over the next year the school will utilise the Quality Teaching and Learning Framework as the core focus for the educational platform of our school. Integrated into a shared understanding of what constitutes effective teaching and learning, the school community believes that the focus on curriculum in welfare and welfare in curriculum has a significant impact upon improving educational opportunities and outcomes for our students.
